Let's be real, Monster Hunter Rise sucks.

"This loading screen took 5 minutes to load by the way."

Monster Hunter is an old franchise, you might think the newest monster hunter has to be the best since it's the newest entry but. However.
This game has several shortcomings. I have a deep appreciation for *Monster Hunter Freedom Unite*. The earlier titles in the *Monster Hunter* series feature a minimalist design that, upon replaying, reveals its simplicity and effectiveness. It's just so good.

"Look at those beautiful biome. Holy shit! Grass never looked that good!"
I am not saying this because of nostalgia. There's something about Monster Hunter Freedom Unite just feel like, right. It has depth, a sense of realism, without planning, you will fail the mission. You're not a super human, you're human, if you don't wear armor, you will die. When you're gathering, you gather slowly. You can't jump very high, you can't drink potion very fast, you can't do amazing combos just because you're a more experienced hunter. Everything is set in stone from the start. Which gives a distinct old school feel.

I remember when defeating Yian Kut Ku makes you a true monster hunter. Back then, none of my siblings could beat this boss fight. They quit before it gets good. Playing this strange game without any guides was a nightmare. But it was fun, I remember there were no npc telling you what to do, you have to figure out everything, stats, sharpness, affinity, armor and defense, jewels. There was a steep learning curve, you had to find everything online.
"Fuck this bird seriously."
Not only does he possess scales made of steel, but each time he takes flight, players experience a pushback effect that causes them to stagger for a few seconds. This vulnerability creates an opportunity for the wyvern to land a free hit. Luckily, he doesn't really have any crazy moves, like the Kirin or Deviljo.

But to me, killing Yian Kut-Ku marks the first step of you becoming a true monster hunter. Because this bird is much much more stronger than any Velociprey or Bulldozer you come across. The other boss fights were challenging, but not as challenging as this bird wyvern, because you already overcame this bird which can 2 shot you if you had bad equipment. By defeating this boss, you essentially learned 'how-to-hunt".

What does Rise has to offer compared to Freedom Unite.

Wirebugs. I dislike them. The more monster hunter gets updated, the less realistic it becomes.

"AAAAAAAAAA!!! I AM GONNA SHOOOOOOT MY WIREBUG AT HIGH SPEED!!!"

While Monster Hunter World didn't had wirebug, a lot of mechanics were changed. And the biggest change was the graphics. It looked a lot more shiny instead of keeping it real like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. It looked ugly to me, in a strange way, even though it was suppose to be an upgrade.
"How did they make it look so weird... the palette looks wrong."

I know what you're thinking, "wow imagine hating a game where it got better updates, cringe as f" Shut your ugly ass up, I really like when monster hunter was a plain, challenging game that requires you to think before lashing out. Since all movements has delays, and we should have more skills at our disposal to make the hunting easier. Isn't that cheating? Like the monster is already giving you handicap by not possessing a human brain/common sense, and you still want to have skills that counter, evade half of the damage?(MHGU), critical draw? How defeated do you want the monsters to be? They are monsters, not your prey, they are suppose to hunt you, they are not the challenger, you're.

The only monster hunter that I can approve skills is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. That game had a lot of monsters that move very swiftly. And Jinouga is probably the most entertaining boss fight of all time.
"This guy just screams baddass."
