Nobody is hiring.
That's right people, nobody is hiring in singapore.
You can have diploma or degree but you fail at communication, nobody will hire you.
It's been weeks since I've graduated from Republic Polytechnic (RP).
I have made this post out of sheer frustration and hatred at the school. The reasons are pretty simple. Take note that my school is beautiful, the environment is beautiful and the facilitators are all nice but... most of them are very bashful and would rather give you a D grade or B grade without telling you anything.
I am not sure what is the point of B grade and D grade here, we all know that all singaporean high school graduates are aiming for a degree or after polytechnic they are going to find a nice job, have a great career, make singapore great again. But honestly, after 3 years of studying here, I feel like I have just wasted 3 years of my life here. There are many reasons that make me came to this conclusion, please continue reading, and drop out if you find this is not what you're passionate about.
Reason Number 1: The system is flawed
The system is still the same after all these years.
I kid you not, the learning package, the worksheets are all the same after all these years. The only difference is the problem statement, the one behind editing them may change the problem statement or add a few new questions, but essentially, they are the same as past papers you find in coursehero. If you get premium, you have no problem passing the course even if you do not give a fuck.
The First Impression counts is very real here, the Facilitators will be the one to give you overall grade for the day or per 3 lessons, so during the first lesson, some students will attempt to impress them with knowledge or ask a lot of questions. They will "smoke" or "bomb" and talk a lot, being a nuisance and giving the impression that you are proactively participating in class discussion. I kid you not, I HAVE SEEN SOME OF THEM get backlash from other students for attempting to impress, that the rest of the module lessons were them bullying those smarter students for trying to be good student. Watching this is just hilarious, it's really like singaporeans fighting over a rice bowl. Or jealousy overdose. It is terrible guys, why do you allow this to happen? RP lecturers.
Lecturers do not teach students or ask student to socialise with them. It is not mandatory for RP students to do this, but some students will attempt small talk to lecturers, smile smile a bit. Then for their homework and classwork, they did absolutely terrible. They have to resort to copying from their friends or ask for help. I did this as well, sometimes, because the lecturers do not teach. Most of them just tell you to download the package and that's the end. Well, given that some of them teach 5 classes, I get how mentally draining it can be. But if your students are just copying others, are they truly learning? It's not like they cannot read, it's just they don't understand. You Have To Guide Them. Everyone is different, nobody is perfect. I had to learn that this the hard way. "Everyone can give up on you, but you cannot give up on yourself." I really envy those people who were self-sufficient and finish work in 2 hours.
Students hating their teammates for no reasonš¤·. There are some really rude students in Republic Poly. Like every other place, there are good and bad people. The bad ones LOVE to call others "Retard/Dementia" for not socializing or only attempting to do their work. Sorry lah, not everyone is as chatty as you, some people really are struggling to do their work, and you're here making their life more difficulty. Like
"Are you a bastard?" "Are you the one stupid here or... am I going crazy?"
Just sitting beside this kind of person trying to be their friend and taking side is agonizing for me. I want to say, "Tone down a bit" but why would they listen, I am their friend and protecting a stranger is even stranger for me. I dunno what to do man. I honestly do not know. They should make module for this uh, call it "Workplace bullying by Ah Bengs". In fact, you should always get along with your classmates, hating each others DOES NOTHING. I repeat, IT DOES NOTHING FOR YOU. So don't always argue, I know you might not see them in the next 5 years but come on man. In other semesters I was the one bullied, so it's kind of like retribution, I guess?
Team Rotations(Hell). This team rotation is seriously fked up. Whoever thought this was a good idea should get fired from RP. So as you all know, if you change your team every 4 weeks, you will never truly forge a long-term relationship with your buddies(I will talk more about this later), you might even end up with your enemy or other ah bengs from other class. The Team evaluation does nothing. So why is republic poly still doing this? Because we will work with other people when we go work in future? That doesn't make any sense though, if you work with new people, you're always going to start from level 1 again, so THERE'S NO NEED for such training. I seriously think that.
Reason 2: Republic Poly - is not a good school
I can proudly say that Republic Polytechnic lecturers are not good. Not Excellent. Not mediocre, they are SHIT. Coming from ITE College Central, I have seen better lecturers in Higher Nitec who could crack jokes and make the lesson more bearable to listen to. They might be knowledgeable, but they refuse to share everything, only bits and there, if you don't remember, well good day to you. They don't... actually held seminars or talk during lessons, I mean some ITE lecturers also does the same thing. Not the most supportive. There are some truly supportive ones however. There are also some that have deep china accent and their command in english for speaking is absolutely a blast to listen to. I rather they teach in chinese! I love Chinese! I wish I could be studying chinese than learning coding! Fuck me.
The nonsensical FYP Project. As you all know, all poly graduates must pass FYP and their IIP, or they cannot graduate. But the thing with FYP is, if you pick the wrong teammates, you are majorly screwed. That was my experience. And it was the worst experience ever. In ITE, I am blessed with a team of 7 people, there was 1 smart guy and few dumb guys(I guess I am one of them) but we never quarreled/argued, EVER. We actually enjoy the project because there was enough work being split between us and we actually have a lot of free time after completing. But not for RP's FYP... RP's FYP is a nightmare. Here's why.
Lecturers don't do anything, they are just there to supervise and rush you when your Final Year Project is going at a pace too slow compared to other team. I am confident they are comparing us and asking us to work for our grade. But the irony is, the carrot is too irrelevant. Most of the RP students from my cohort had less than 3.0 GPA, so it doesn't matter for them whether they did well for FYP or did poorly, because it will not pull their grade up. Because of this, do you readers know what my guys did? Make a guess, I am waiting, I am actually impressed you read all my garbage and random stuff until here. I am truly grateful, for your attention.
3... 2... 1...
They did nothing worthy of commendation. I mean one guy did a survey, and went missing the entire FYP period. The other guy was the team lead, but doesn't really matter, because he didn't actually lead. He was Fucking Useless, he disgrace his father's name. The girl on my team did a few posters, namecards and logo design, but ultimately, all of their work were not worthy of commendation. It was ugly, it was not up to standard, it look like it was done by children from fifth grade. My lord! If I have not design a website and submit to my lecturer, guess what would have happen? F FOR FUCKING FAIL GRADE FUCKING DOUCHEBAAAAAAAAAGS!!!!!! (This is not the worst part, keep reading, I promise at the end of this blog post, it will be entertaining) I do feel without the teacher, we would've been lost sheeps. So I actually want to thank our Lecturer, Jean Lim, for being such a great backer. Or a great leader. If only she was my team lead. Haha.
One funny thing about RP's FYP project is that you have to submit a poster with your team all standing together united, honestly
